You’ve fed them, changed them, rocked them, bounced them, driven around the block at midnight. Nothing works. If your baby cries inconsolably for hours at a time and you’ve been told it’s “just colic — they’ll grow out of it,” we want you to know two things: you are not failing, and there may be something that actually helps!
What Is Colic, Really?
Colic is typically defined as crying for more than three hours a day, more than three days a week, for more than three weeks. What that definition doesn’t tell you is why it’s happening. For many babies, the answer lives in the nervous system.
A baby’s nervous system is in charge of everything — digestion, muscle tension, stress response, sleep and how they process the world around them. When the nervous system is stuck in a state of overdrive, babies can’t self-regulate. They startle easily, they tense up, they can’t settle, and they cry.
One of the most common causes of nervous system dysregulation in newborns is tension in the upper cervical spine from birth. Even a completely normal delivery involves significant forces on a baby’s head and neck. Vacuum or forceps delivery, a long or very fast labor, a posterior baby, or a C-section can all increase that tension. The result is a nervous system that never quite comes down from high alert.
How Chiropractic Care Helps
Gentle chiropractic adjustments help release tension in the spine and surrounding tissues. When the nervous system gets the input it needs to regulate, many babies experience a noticeable shift. Parents commonly describe their baby as calmer and easier to settle after just a few visits, sleeping in longer stretches, feeding more comfortably with less gas and spitting up, and making more eye contact and seeming more at ease in their body.
What a Visit Looks Like
We know bringing in a fussy, overtired baby feels daunting. We’ve got you. Our office is calm, our approach is slow and gentle, and we’re used to working with babies who are having a hard time. An initial visit includes a full history and a gentle assessment of your baby’s spine and nervous system tone. Adjustments take just a few minutes and most babies relax noticeably on the table.
You have been carrying so much. If your baby is struggling with colic, please don’t wait it out alone. There may be a simple, gentle answer you haven’t tried yet and we’d love to help!
