The start of a new school year is exciting and, let’s be honest, a little chaotic. Between new schedules, school supply lists, and the adjustment from lazy summer days to early alarms, it takes a bit of planning to make the transition smooth for the whole family. Here are our office’s favorite back to school tips to help your kids (and you) start the year feeling calm, organized, and ready to go.
Don’t wait until the night before school starts to switch from summer bedtimes to school-year bedtimes. A week or two before the first day, begin shifting bedtime and wake-up time by 15–20 minutes earlier each day. This gradual approach helps reset your child’s internal clock without the shock of an abrupt change, making those early mornings much easier to handle once school begins.
Predictable routines reduce stress for kids and parents alike. A consistent evening routine (pack the backpack, lay out clothes, review the next day’s schedule) means mornings run smoother and nobody’s scrambling to find a missing shoe five minutes before the bus arrives. Consider a visual checklist for younger kids so they can build independence with their routine.
Having a consistent, clutter-free spot for homework helps kids transition into focus mode more easily. Look for a space with good lighting, a supportive chair, and minimal distractions. If possible, keep basic supplies stocked right there so homework time doesn’t turn into a supply scavenger hunt.
What kids eat during the school day has a real impact on their energy and focus. Aim for lunches with a mix of protein, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, and keep sugary snacks to a minimum since they can lead to energy crashes later in the afternoon. Getting kids involved in packing their own lunch can also make them more likely to actually eat it.
School days involve a lot of sitting — in class, on the bus, at the desk during homework. Encourage active play, a family walk, or a favorite sport after school to help kids release energy, support healthy circulation, and counterbalance those hours spent sitting still.
A new school year brings a lot for a child’s nervous system to process. New teachers, new classmates, new routines, more homework, and a packed schedule all add up to a significant increase in daily stimulation. For many kids, this shows up as trouble settling down at bedtime, increased irritability, trouble focusing, or that overwhelmed, “wound up” feeling by the end of the day.
The nervous system is the body’s command center and it’s constantly processing input from the environment and coordinating how the body responds. When there is nervous system tension, it can interfere with that communication, potentially making it harder for the body to shift out of a stressed, “fight or flight” state and into the calm, regulated state kids need for good sleep, steady focus, and emotional balance.
Getting adjusted works to remove that interference. A properly aligned spine supports clearer communication between the brain and body, which may help:
Many parents notice that kids who receive regular chiropractic care seem to handle the back-to-school transition with a little more ease. Making adjustments a regular part of your family’s routine, not just a one-time back-to-school visit, can offer ongoing support as the demands of the school year continue to build.
A few small, intentional habits can make a big difference in how smoothly the back-to-school transition goes for your family. If you’d like to add a nervous check to your family’s back to school checklist, we’d love to see you and your kids before the first bell rings!
