“Do I Really Need to Keep Coming?” Understanding Maintenance Care and Why It Matters

It’s one of the questions we hear most often from practice members once they start feeling better: “Do I really need to keep coming in if I’m not hurting anymore?”

It’s a fair question, and we love when you ask it because it gives us the chance to talk about one of the most important (and most misunderstood) principles in chiropractic care. The short answer is: feeling better and being well are two different things. And understanding that distinction can genuinely change the way you think about your health.

The Pain Signal Is the Last Thing to Arrive

Pain is the body’s last resort. By the time you actually feel pain, dysfunction has typically been present for quite some time. Think of it like a tooth cavity — you don’t feel it forming, but by the time it hurts, there’s already significant damage. The absence of pain doesn’t mean everything is functioning optimally. It just means you haven’t reached the threshold where the signal is strong enough to register.

This is especially true of the spine and nervous system. Subluxations, areas of nerve interference, can develop and persist without producing obvious pain. Yet they continue to affect the body’s ability to communicate, adapt, heal, and regulate throughout that entire time.

What Maintenance Care Actually Means

Once a patient completes an initial care plan and their nervous system has moved toward a healthier baseline, maintenance (or wellness) care is simply periodic check-ins to make sure things stay on track.

Life is full of ongoing stressors (physical, emotional, chemical) that continuously affect spinal alignment and nervous system function. How you sleep, how you sit, how you handle a stressful week, whether you’ve been fighting off a virus — all of it creates shifts that regular chiropractic care helps keep in check before they build into bigger problems.

Think of it the same way you think about dental cleanings, oil changes, or annual physicals. You don’t skip your teeth cleaning just because your teeth don’t hurt. Maintenance is what keeps a good thing going.

The Research Behind Regular Care

Studies consistently show that patients who continue chiropractic care after initial symptom resolution experience fewer flare-ups, better quality of life, and lower overall healthcare utilization over time. The nervous system, like any system in the body, functions better with consistent support than with sporadic crisis intervention.

What This Looks Like at Freedom Chiropractic

We meet practice members where they are. Some come in weekly, others every two to four weeks, depending on their health goals, lifestyle demands, and how their body is responding. After your initial care plan, we work with you to figure out a maintenance frequency that makes sense for your life.

Our goal is never to create dependency! It’s to empower you to understand your body, advocate for your health, and make informed decisions that serve you well for the long term.

If you have questions about what ongoing care might look like for you or your family, don’t hesitate to ask us at your next visit. We’re always happy to have that conversation. Freedom starts at freedomknox.com or (865) 415-2497.
